Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See by Bill Martin, Jr. felt story

I’ve been dying to translate Eric Carle’s illustrations into felt! I used Sharpies for some of the detailing, but I think I’ll try working with puffy paint next week for a better visuals. I’m also going to work on my lighting and photography skills ;)

This week’s Flannel Friday Roundup is hosted over at Loons and Quines! Also, I love browsing the Flannel Friday Pinterest account for inspiration and ideas.

  1. Beautiful pieces! I knew right away they were Eric Carle’s illustrations so you did a great job translating his art onto felt. The layering effect turned out well too.

  2. Those are gorgeous pieces that look just like the book. Well done!

  3. WOW! They are just like the book! VERY impressive!

  4. You’ve inpsired me. I’ve been thinking that I’d like to do an “Eric Carle Day” but I need to mix things up a bit, can’t just read books the whole time. I think if I did a flannel like this of at least one of his books, it would work well. Now, does anyone have some “Eric Carle” action songs? (HA!)

    • Erica, I do have a few “creative movement” activities and/or “action rhymes” that I do with Eric Carle books. Give me a few days ~ I’m super busy with Valentine’s Day programs right now ~ and I will pull them out and post them. One I am thinking of is “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, Turn Around”.

Oh, here is a quick tip for planning with several books in mind: Think about the characters or animals or themes from the books and then search out songs, fingerboard, etc with those in mind. For example, for Brown Bear I would do something with bears, birds, fish, frogs, ducks, colors, etc. When you think about the book characters and themes, it is easier
to come up with stuff. :-) I have tons of ideas but already took up too much space here. :-/ Email me if you want to brainstorm together. StorytimeabcsATgmailDOTcom

  5. Brown Bear was the first bulletin board I made for student teaching. I know how hard it is to make these look like the original artwork. This is wonderful — a keeper!

  6. so cute! i love brown bear, brown bear what do you see!

  7. I love Eric Carle! And these felt pieces are so like his illustrations.
